Starting from a notebook

Night Squad is an adventure game set in the fall of 1991. Kids, bikes, a treehouse, a thing that came down in the woods, and an old mine that everyone's parents said to stay out of. It's the kind of game I wanted when I was that age and the kind of afternoon I actually had.

Here is the honest state of it: it exists in a graph paper notebook. Rooms, puzzles, a boss, a rough script. No code. I'm learning to program, draw, and write music at the same time as building it, which is either the worst possible plan or the only one available to me.

Why one room, not the prologue

The design in the notebook is a full prologue, about an hour long. Made by someone who already knew how to do all of this, that's a long project. Made by me, learning as I go, around a full-time job, it's long enough that I'd probably never finish it.

So the first thing I put in front of anyone will be one room. One screen, one mechanic, one enemy, one piece of music. Five minutes. Free. Not because it's a good business plan but because finishing something is the skill I most need to prove I have.

What's next

Learning the fundamentals properly before I write a line of the real thing. After that, the room.
